🌍 Why Olive Oil Is Always in Season: A Simple Guide to Global Harvests
One of the most fascinating things about extra virgin olive oil is that fresh oil is available year‑round. That’s because olive trees are grown in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, and their harvest seasons are perfectly opposite. When one side of the world finishes pressing olives, the other is just getting started.
This global rhythm keeps truly fresh EVOO flowing all year.
🌿 Northern Hemisphere: The World’s Olive Oil Powerhouse
The Northern Hemisphere produces about 95% of the world’s olive oil, with the Mediterranean Basin at its heart.
Harvest Season: October – January
Freshness Peak: December – March
Key Regions:
- Spain – The largest producer on earth. Andalusia (especially Jaén) creates most of the country’s oil.
- Italy – Known for both volume and premium quality. Puglia, Calabria, Sicily, Tuscany, and Liguria are major contributors.
- Greece – Olives dominate the landscape. Crete and the Peloponnese lead production.
- Portugal – Alentejo is the star region, with additional production in Trás‑os‑Montes and Beira Interior.
- North Africa – Tunisia is the world’s fourth‑largest producer; Morocco’s Meknes region is also significant.
- United States – Nearly all U.S. olive oil comes from California’s Central Valley and Sierra Nevada foothills.
🌱 Southern Hemisphere: Fresh Oil When the North Is Out of Season
Though smaller in volume, the Southern Hemisphere is essential for keeping fresh EVOO available during the Northern off‑season.
Harvest Season: April – July
Freshness Peak: June – September
Key Regions:
- Argentina – The largest producer in the Southern Hemisphere, with major groves in La Rioja, Mendoza, San Juan, and Catamarca.
- Australia – Primarily grown in Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia’s southwest coast.
- Chile – Production stretches from the Azapa Valley down to the Maule Valley.
- South Africa – The Western Cape, especially the Nuy Valley, is the main hub.
- Emerging Regions – Uruguay, Brazil, Peru, and New Zealand continue to expand their olive oil industries.
